Year 11 English: Supporting your son/daughter’s progress in English

As you may know, Year 11 students should now be preparing for their GCSE English exam on Tuesday 2 June. This exam counts for 60% of students’ overall grade and is the most challenging part of the course.

There are plenty of things students can be doing between now and then to help aid revision and maximise their chances of success.

  • If they are struggling with English homework, students can attend an English Homework Club on Friday lunchtimes. They can ask their teachers for an early lunch pass and go to H3 where they will receive support and help
  • English Club is on a Wednesday from 3.30pm until 4.30pm in H1. This will focus on areas of the exam which students find the most difficult
  • Watch YouTube tutorials on individual exam questions (search for Mrs Whelan’s English on YouTube)
  • Purchase a decent exam revision book. We recommend:
  • The Pearson ‘Revise AQA: GCSE English and English Language Revision Workbook’ (Higher OR Foundation) both of these are available to buy from College at a cost of £3.00.
  • Attempt past exam papers. Go to aqa.org.uk and click on the purple link to ‘past papers’. Students will need to search for the relevant tier of entry and make sure they open the insert and the question paper.
  • Keep a scrap book of non-fiction texts. Students should try to collect and annotate newspaper/magazine articles, adverts, informative leaflets, charity letters, flyers etc in a scrapbook. They should annotate them for presentational and language features.
  • Print off articles from Complete Issues and create own exam papers: completeissues.co.uk Login = WhitbyCC password = English
  • Make revision cards and notes for the exam
  • Make a revision timetable and begin it NOW. The exams will soon be here! On the next page is a suggested revision timetable students could begin using.
  • Support students by asking what they are doing, what they need to be doing and encouraging them to speak to their teachers if they need help.
