On 8 June 2016, Year 6 children from local primary schools joined Caedmon College Whitby for a fun-filled day of international-style activities, using several languages such as German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and French. On arrival, the children went to the “Bureau de Change” to get their euros ready for spending at the French Patisserie at break time. The College’s Year 7 ‘Language Leaders’ worked as café assistants, selling croissants, pains au chocolat and drinks whilst ensuring that everyone spoke entirely in French. During the day, the students experienced outdoor pursuits whilst participating in cycling “Tour de Caedmon” and learning how to play “Boules”. The children also tasted foods from around the world and undertook several sessions using digital technology. At the end of each session, the students added a charm to their DREAMCATCHER, which they were able to use after the event to describe their learning journey during the day and reflect on the various linguistic experiences in which they had partaken.
