During the months of May and June, York University set weekly Olympics challenges for over 40 teams in the North East of Yorkshire. Caedmon College entered a French team comprised of year 9 and 10 students: Georgia Hutchinson, Harry Reeves, Kheda Mustafayeva, Sam Gower, Ethan Humble and Eloise Clarkson. Each student had specific research or creative linguistic tasks to do every week, which were subsequently uploaded and submitted electronically to the Routes into Languages coordinator at York University.
On Thursday 30 June our team set off for York University to spend the day engaging in language based fun lessons. In the morning, our students were delighted to find themselves learning Catalan, Japanese and Chinese Mandarin, as well as take part in a lecture style linguistics/phonetics seminar. We particularly enjoyed making origami sumo wrestlers during the Japanese lesson and cheering them on in Japanese. Great fun indeed!
The afternoon saw an exciting Awards Ceremony where many of the schools and colleges involved gathered together to celebrate each others’ success across the various tasks. We were particularly proud and honoured to be awarded Language Champions Overall Winner 2016.
