Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

Both Year 12 and 13 were lucky enough to have a visit from Dr Peter Hoare from Newcastle University. Peter, who is funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), brought very expensive NMR and IR spectroscopy machines into College for students to use during a workshop. Each machine costs £25,000. The students ran a variety of samples and were able to analyse the spectra produced. This was a great ‘hands on’ experience and excellent practice: our students will be expected to analyse a wide range of spectra in their A2 chemistry exams. A big thank you to Mr Mitchell and Dr Hoare for organising these events, we hope to do more work with Peter in the future across other year groups.
