I write to inform you of some changes to the Year 9 curriculum for next year. Unlike in previous years, students will not be making final decisions about which GCSE options they wish to follow. Instead, we will be asking them to make some decisions that will retain a degree of breadth and balance to their curriculum whilst, at the same time, giving them an element of choice.
Their curriculum will be organised in two main strands:
Including English, Maths, Science, Religious Studies, Core PE and all students at KS4 will continue studying these.
History or Geography – all students will be expected to continue one of these until the end of Year 11
A performing arts subject
French or German
Further choices from a range of Humanities, Creative Arts and Technology.
At the end of Year 9, we will then ask students to choose their GCSE options. They will continue with History or Geography and will be asked to choose three more subjects to study. This could be a continuation of one of their choices from Year 9, or they may choose a new subject, for example, PE, Sport or Health and Social Care.
We will be holding an information evening on Tuesday 19 March regarding this change. There will be introductory talks at 4.30pm and 5.30pm in the College Learning Centre on our Normanby Site. This will provide an opportunity to meet subject teachers and to help you and your son/daughter with their decision-making. There will also be a presentation from our Careers Advisor and she will be available on the night to give advice if required.
I look forward to seeing you at this event. If you are unable to attend, but would like to come into College at another time, please contact me by telephone or email at the College so that we can arrange a mutually convenient time for this.
